I am so overjoyed to be a wedding photographer, but, more than that, I love being an artist. I started my artistic journey before I can remember. Literally. There is a collection of drawings in my baby book of brides with 80's hair and lace dresses. My earliest bridal drawing says I was 4. As I grew, I continued to search for my avenue of art, feeling my way through music composition, vocal recordings, clay sculpting, writing, and finally photography. It is here - immersed in light and styling - where I finally felt at home as an artist. And it is here - capturing love at its finest and marriage at its beginning - where I find myself incredibly happy.
If you drop by to see me, you'll most likely find me holed up with a book and a cup of coffee or watching a chick-flick and eating pizza. I have a thing for the crosswords in the back of People magazines and an affair with the gossip of US Weekly. I think that Christmas is the most magical time of the year and that laughter is the best medicine. I eat chocolate like there's no tomorrow - seriously, I love chocolate - and am a California girl at heart.
I absolutely cannot wait to get to know you and join you on this journey towards one of the most important days of your life.
Family & Faith
They are vital to my existence. My faith gives me a reason for living and my family is who I'm blessed to spend my life with. I grew up as a PK (pastor's kid) in a small, rural farming town in Iowa. We didn't have television; my imagination more than made up for it and the farm was my playground. I made dozens upon dozens of mud cookies on ice cream bucket lid "pans" and dressed up the farm cats in my doll clothes. Some days I was a flight attendant (my dad gave me his used airline boarding passes), some days a mommy to my dolls and/or farm cats, some days the queen of England (which may attribute to my love of Kate Middleton), and some days I was an Indian warrior princess down by the creek.
It sounds cliché, but he is my best friend. We were best friends long before we started dating and I feel so lucky to have that foundation to our relationship. We got married in the spring of 2009 in a beautiful little white chapel in the countryside. The years have flown by, but I can honestly say that our marriage has been the biggest blessing to me. My one sister always tells me that she's so glad I have Kevin because she knows she doesn't have to worry about me now. Together, we're better.
I became his mama in November of 2014 and my world was changed. Becoming a parent is simultaneously the most difficult and the most wonderful task. My heart aches with love and I can’t believe we have been blessed with the gift of raising this beautiful boy. He makes me laugh more than anyone else I know.
At 5'3" (almost!), I have always been a fan of additional height. I think heels are both feminine and beautiful. And they push me up to 5'7", which is really my ideal height. I love a good wedge too and, since becoming a mother, have learned to get around in flats as well.
I love watching movies, but I'm a lightweight when it comes to content. I like chick-flicks (my favorite is You've Got Mail—give it up for any Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan pairing!), musicals (Annie, Newsies, Hairspray, The Sound of Music...you name it and I've probably got the soundtrack), and based-on-true-stories sports movies (Remember the Titans, The Blind Side, We Are Marshall, and the TV show Friday Night Lights). I’m no slouch when it comes to knowing my way around Netflix.
Cup of Joe
I don't love coffee for it's caffeine—in fact, I drink decaf—but I love the taste of coffee and the experience of slowly sipping the hot brew in the morning is just part of my routine. I always doctor up my coffee; actually, truth be told, my husband usually makes my coffee. He adds sugar and cream...because I have a sweet tooth.
I’m basically a 3-year-old when it comes to snacks. It’s the best part (parts?) of every day. Here are some favorites: peanut butter with mini chocolate chips, gummy bears, chips and salsa, cheese of any kind, Nutella, those pickle rolls with cream cheese and meat, and anything involving chocolate. I’m trying to add some healthier items to my snack list, but they have a hard battle to win against all these!
I love to read. One of my all-time favorite books is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I love the feel and smell of real books, but the ease of using an iPad. You can follow along on Instagram with the hashtag #emilysreads. Now that I have a child, I’m introducing him to the love of books and his library has grown nearly as large as mine.
Be still a moment amid the happy chaos of your day. You have proclaimed your love publicly, religiously, spiritually. But do not
neglect the small declarations: the touch, the bright-eyed glance, the soft words "I adore you." Love has cleared this path between you, and finds its way in quiet moments, to rest upon your hearts with the gentle weight of your head on his shoulder, his hand on your back.

Thank you for capturing such a rich and beautiful day of our lives. We could not imagine having anyone else share that day with us! "I don't think I ever really got to express my true and profound gratitude for everything you did for us that day, not to mention the days before and after. Your genuine caring and thoughtfulness made Rachael and I feel so much more relaxed on our wedding day. You were always keeping everything on track and knew what was supposed to be happening even when we didn't. It's truly inspirational to see you and your husband work so well together, and I hope that Rachael and I will have the same enduring friendship as you and Kevin."
"Emily, a thank you card really isn’t sufficient to say how much we appreciate all you did at our wedding. You captured it all so perfectly—plus, you were so fun to work with! I felt so relaxed with you in charge.”
"Dear Emily, we will never be able to thank you enough for providing us with a lifetime of memories from our wedding day. Your elegant and natural style of photography paired perfectly with our personalities and expectations. You came highly recommended so we knew up front that you were great, but you blew us away with how absolutely INCREDIBLE you are! We will forever cherish our wedding album and our memories and we have you to thank for that!"
We all want beautiful photos. That's a given.
So, here's the skinny: in my experience over the years working with couples I have come to realize that every single couple is unique. (Of course!) So trying to squeeze each bride into a mold for pricing just doesn't work. All of my weddings have a simple base price and then you may add additional a la carte items to it if you wish. No need to though; there's lots of great stuff that is already included!
You deserve to have time stop for you.
I have always been a huge believer that photography plays an important role in capturing who we are and providing imagery to memories that would otherwise fade with time. I get excited about capturing life, stories, and reality. Freezing time with my camera in a unique and imaginative way is the best way that I can contribute with my creativity to other peoples lives and have it make a difference.
I enjoy making you feel beautiful and cared about. While photographing, I will focus on capturing your personality, your best features, color, textures...
